Bergen again

Today we went to Bergen again.  It was another cold night but as the day wore on I took off all my layers down to a T-shirt.  We took the bus and tram into the city calling first at the house I used to live in, then walking down to the fish market/Bryggen area where we got a bus to an outdoor museum called Old Bergen.  The houses here have all been saved from demolition and relocated in a sort of village and each one is either what it was (eg the sailor's widows house) or made to be something in keeping with its era, watch maker, dentist, baker etc.  A lady in period costume (1880's) gave us a talk and took us into the original owner of the land's house, it was their holiday home where they held parties.  In the dining room she told us what was on the menu from one party - all very fancy stuff though she was bewildered by the word 'blancmange'.

After we'd had enough of this we went back to Bryggen for coffee and pastries before visiting Bryggen museum where we learned about the origins of the area, the first houses being built in the 1100's and in the same sort of style as the buildings that still exist today.  Then we went to the maritime museum but didn't stay long because we were getting a bit museumed out - then McDonalds for lunch (Norway is extremely expensive - as we knew it would be- so we have to eat cheap!)

Then on the way back to the camp we stopped off to get wine as I had spotted a 'wine monopoly' shop.  The cheapest wine was about $20 a bottle - so Norway is not the place for cheap drinks like France and Italy.  Then we visited Fantoft stave church which I remembered from when I lived in Bergen.  This time we visited a stave church in the sun instead of the rain, unlike our previous ones.  We were so tired after all our sight-seeing (or maybe wine drinking) we had an early night, as we planned to be up early the next morning.
