Stockholm
Stockholm is a
fantastic city! We went by
T-bane(underground) from the camp site to Gamlestan (old town) which is a
warren of streets on an island.
Stockholm spreads out from here onto other islands. Quite walkable and we did spend about 8 hours
doing so!
First we looked
around some of the streets of Gamlestan and had a coffee and a Swedish
'Danish'. Then we looked around a museum
about Stockholm's development and life in times gone by. Next we got a ferry to another island ( a bit
like Venice) where we went to the museum that houses the ship Vasa. The Vasa was built in 1628 for the Swedish
King, it was gilded and ornately carved - a showpiece - but as she set off on
her maiden voyage she turned turtle and sank.
In 1961 she was refloated and is 98% original after 333 yrs under water.
Then we had lunch in
the spirits and alcohol museum bar. We
couldn't afford real lunch so had another coffee and Swedish Danish. Stoneleigh Sav was for sale there at 385 kr a
bottle or 87 kroner a glass. The
exchange rate is 4 kr = 1$. So we
weren't tempted to have a glass!! Jacobs
creek red was the same price and they weren't the most expensive!
back on the main
island I trod in the footsteps of Daniel Craig.
Well possibly. Fans of Steig
Larsen's Girl with the dragon tattoo etc will remember it's set in Stockholm so
we checked out some of the places featured.
While wandering up a back alley we found a film crew filming a costume
drama and had to wait while they filmed a scene.
We did one more
museum (the medieval one) before getting the train back to the camp site. It is much warmer here (around 24 today) but
it gets dark much earlier - we have been in the light at 10.30pm but it was
dark here last night at 9.00pm. Last
night we had Thai (with wine/beer) at the camp site restaurant as our camping
gas cooker meals are getting a bit repetitive!
Very nice - and for entertainment the armed offenders squad plus dog
raided the restaurant! Don't know why
I'm sure Malcolm didn't run any red lights!
YEP SEE YOU THERE HEATHER FOR QUIZ NIGHT, VERY FUNNY!! WE GOT SECOND ANYWAY!!. USUAL STORY , THE ONE QUESTION I KNOW NOBODY BELIEVES ME!!. ALL'S GOOD IN NZ. ELAINE
ReplyDeleteHaha I can't believe that the armed offenders squad came to your dinner, so crazy! Also that price for wine is crazy, you guys should go to France or something and get heaps of bottles for 2 Euro! They sell some NZ and Australian wines at our corner shop but they are only about 7 pounds so not too bad!
