Oslo

Tuesday 6

Drove up into Norway and camped in Oslo.  The weather turned showery but we walked into Oslo and looked at the sights in the city centre - the Cathedral, the Kings palace, the harbour and the old castle  and fortifications.  We had coffee in a place advertising Ngunguru coffee!  Turns out it is in Africa!!

Wednesday 7

Sunny again.  We had a 24 hr travel pass so went by bus, ferry, tram and train.  Most of Oslo's museums are on a peninsula in the fjord so we went by ferry, first to the Fram museum which is about the history of polar expeditions, especially the ship Fram and Nansen and Amundsen's expeditions, then to the Viking ship museum.  This has the Gokstad and Oseburg ships which were excavated from mounds where they had been buried with the cheiftain and his goods.  These included boats, wagons, sleds, gold, weapons, jewellery....

Then we went to the Vigeland sculpture park which has more than 200 sculptures, mainly bronze all done by Gustav Vigeland.  Each one is life sized or bigger and is amazing and there are so many of them!

Back in the city centre we went to the history museum and saw lots more Viking and stuff from the middle ages.  Then we were museumed out so went to McDonalds!  The first one in Norway -opened 1983.

  1. I like the look of Oslo especially the statues. Why would you have a statue of a crying baby? Love the photos. Love Elaine. Jo back tomorrow, yeah!!
